Re-enactor artist provides authentic view of Civil War
Sometimes, in the heat of a battle re-enactment, a Civil War soldier will
pause to take a look at what artist Jim Hoffmann is doing.
“Wow, that’s g
ood!” is a frequent comment before the re-enactor rejoins
his comrades in a charge or retreat.
Hoffmann, a state-employed artist in the government’s Creative Services
division of the Finance and Administration Cabinet, has been seriously
doing sketches of Civil War battles since 2002. Read more

Virginia, Maryland lead top 10 list

Three Virginia and two Maryland sites are among the nation’s 10 most endangered
battlefields according to the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT). History Under
Siege: A Guide to America’s Most Endangered Civil War Battlefields, identifies
2009’s most threatened Civil War sites in the United States and what can be done
to save them. Read more

Confederate sub to be displayed
Leatherwood welcomes Hunley

As part of his “labor of love,” John Dangerfield is bringing his model of the
Confederate submarine Hunley to the Battle of Leatherwood.
The retired marine machinist will tow his 3,500-pound full-scale replica from
his South Carolina home to Cornettsville for the Oct. 23-25 re-enactment
just for $100, gas mileage and lodging. Read more

Evening with Lincolns is April 25

“An Evening with the Lincolns,” an in-depth Civil War discussion between
Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, opens the Battle of Richmond Association’s
(BORA) schedule of 2009 events April 25 at a 5:30 p.m. fund-raising dinner.

Dennan named KHC acting director;
Neary heads Civil War sesquicentennial

Mark Dennen, Kentucky Heritage Council (KHC) program manager for site
development, has been named the Council’s acting executive director and
state historic preservation officer.
His appointment was effective in August and the registered architect replaces
Donna M. Neary who recently was appointed director of Civil War
Sesquicentennial Initiatives at the Kentucky Historical Society. Read more

Kentucky’s Civil War leaders
Nelson only naval officer to become major general

Union Major Gen. William (Bull) Nelson, a member of an old Kentucky family,
was the only naval officer – Union or Confederate – to become a full-rank
Civil War major general.
Born in Maysville, Nelson attended Norwich Academy (now Norwich University)
in Vermont from 1837-39, and, in 1840, was appointed to the United States
Naval Academy. Read more

Perryville facility to be demolished May 1

Because “it’s not often that we get a modern house to train in,” the former
manager’s house at Perryville Battlefield’s Gibson Farm will not be demolished
until May 1, according to Kurt Holman, the battlefield’s park manager.

Perryville apparition

You never know who may be watching. Jessica
Holden views a Confederate grave marker at
Perryville while the grave’s “ghost” watches. The
ghost actually is Jessica’s father, John Stich. The
photo was created from a single digital image with
a lot of background patching and painting, and
cutting out and pasting in the soldier image.

‘Abe and us’

The traffic at the Behringer-Crawford Museum in
Covington, Ky., has been heavy as visitors view the
Abraham Lincoln display – “Abe and Us: Abraham
Lincoln & Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati” - that will

Preserving history

The Confederate submarine Hunley is shown
immersed in a refrigerated storage tank after it
was raised in 1995 from the depths of Charleston,
S.C., Harbor where the vessel sank in 1864.
A full-size replica of the sub will be on display at
the Battle of Leatherwood in October. See feature
