Dennen named KHC acting director; Neary heads Civil War sesquicentennial

Mark Dennen, Kentucky Heritage Council (KHC) program manager for site development, has been named the Council’s acting executive director and state historic preservation officer.

t was effective in August and the registered architect replaces Donna M. Neary who recently was appointed director of Civil War Sesquicentennial Initiatives at the Kentucky Historical Society.

Dennen, who joined the Council in 2000 as a staff architect, was a design architect for Yum! Brand Restaurants, Inc., in Louisville prior to joining KHC. The Shelby County resident has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Kentucky.

The Council is responsible for the identification, protection and preservation of historic buildings, sites and cultural resources throughout the state.

Neary assumed her post as director of Civil War Sesquicentennial Initiatives on Aug. 11. She will lead efforts to plan and coordinate the Kentucky Historical Society's statewide Civil War sesquicentennial efforts, which take place 2011-2015.

The Kentucky initiative will focus beyond military history to the social, political, economic and cultural impact of the Civil War on Kentucky and Kentuckians.

The Louisville resident holds a master's degree in public history from Loyola University, Chicago, and a bachelor's degree in history and journalism from Murray State University.

She has also served as a historic preservation consultant and analyst and as administrator of historic preservation and archives for Jefferson County Fiscal Court. She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Kentucky and o
ther institutions and is the co-author of several books and numerous articles.
