25 members of sesquicentennial group
named, will begin coordinating plans

The 25 members of the Kentucky Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission have been named and will be meeting soon to begin plans for recognizing and celebrating the pivotal role Kentucky played in the Civil War.

The membership includes legislators, Kentucky college and university Civil War specialists, battle historians and members of the Kentucky Heritage Commission and the Kentucky Arts Council.

The commission will operate under the auspices of the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) and is charged with (1) recommending activities to commemorate key Civil War events in the Commonwealth, (2) increasing civic awareness about the principle role of Kentucky in the war, (3) and encouraging communities and businesses to engage in activities to expand the understanding of the war across the state and beyond.

A $1.05 million grant has been awarded KHS to create programming and projects around the theme “Discovering Together:  Kentucky’s Civil War Landscapes.” The 150th anniversary of the Civil War begins in 2011 and extends through 2015.
