More than 10,000 attend weekend
Sacramento has a good thing going

Sacramento has done it again.

The recent Battle of Sacramento re-enactment weekend resulted in more than 10,000 weekend visitors and some 800 re-enactors from 16 states. An overwhelming turnout the community of 400 enthusiastically welcomed.

The May 15-17 event saw visitors arrive on Friday and stay for the weekend, according to spokeswoman Debby Spencer.

Approximately 1,000 arrived with school groups for living history on Friday and programs on Saturday and Sunday had more than 4,000 visitors each day. The Ladies Tea and Fashion show had so many participants, Spencer said, that the event was moved from a school facility to a large auditorium at a Methodist church.

“Even with that, we had a standing-room crowd,” she added.

In addition to “Forrest’s First” re-enactment on Saturday and Sunday, other key events included a cavalry race and competition demonstration, night-time cannon firing, remarks by portrayers of President Lincoln and Generals Lee and Grant, and a Battlefield Ball.

Spencer, president of the WMTH Corporation, said participation by Sacramento community members was outstanding “as usual.”

“Townspeople and churches prepare a tremendous meal that’s served off the back of flat-bed trailers, the Masonic Lodge sponsors a huge fish fry and we have a number of yard sales going on throughout the weekend. And, all our working participants are volunteers,” she said.

Re-enactors come from as far away as Washington, Arkansas and Texas, and many, she added, attend every year.

Spencer said a committee already is planning for next year’s event.
