PICTURE POTPOURRI

‘They got me!!!’
Re-enactment realism was taken
to a new level at Lawrenceburg/
Dogwalk when Confederate troops
“took out” a Union soldier who
was “knocked over” a split rail
fence. Photographer Anne Bevier
Goin captured the action just
before the fall.

More than face value
How much is a proof of a Civil War $1,000 bill worth? That’s a U.S. bill, incidentally. They
found out recently at an auction at Lynbrook, N.Y.

‘Noble sailor’
Charles Flusser was a veteran U.S. Navy commander
who earned the respect of Union officers, being described
as a “noble sailor and gallant patriot.” A Kentuckian
by choice, Flusser went down with his ship in battle
with the CSS Albemarle.

Mural tells story
This mural, hanging in the Palmer House at Battlefield Golf Course, shows
a capsulized view of the Battle of Richmond. The 6x8-foot oil-on-canvas
painting was commissioned in 2006 and helps tell the story of action on the
last day of the battle, Aug. 30, 1862.

Pocketknife removal
Civil War soldiers suffered badly enough when they lost part of their limbs
due to battle injury. But, it’s even worse when you have to do the removal
ourself. John Wales January was one tough customer.
