Confederates await the order to attack as they watch Union
troops advance at the October Battle of Perryville. Some
5,000 spectators attended Oct. 6 activities at the 150th
anniversary of the 1862 battle.

Spoils of war
On September 28, 1894, a group of Civil War veterans – shown here with the Williams
Rapid Fire Gun – gathered for a reunion at Paintsville. The artillery piece was one of the
day’s featured attractions, brought by Union Capt. Reuben Patrick who stole the cannon
from the camp of  CSA Gen. Humphrey Marshall.

Staple remembered
Dudley Mitchell appreciated the small things in life,
apparently even hardtack. The Union infantry soldier probably
has the only tombstone implanted with the hard and dry
bread/cracker.
