Dixie Rose’ debuts as commemoration
to those who died at Richmond battle

Madison County’s one-and-only winery is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Richmond in a unique manner.

Acres of Land’s newest wine – Dixie Rose’ – has been introduced to honor those who fought and died in the 1862 War-Between-the-States conflict. Profits from the sale of the beverage will be donated to support the Battle of Richmond Association (BORA) in its efforts to preserve the history and heritage of Kentucky’s second-largest Civil War encounter.

“We believe Acres of Land truly has made a unique contribution to the Civil War’s sesquicentennial and to our organization,” BORA Managing Director Paul Rominger said. “We know of no other firm in the winery industry to introduce a new product and earmark a portion of its profits to support a Civil War battlefield and park.”

Dixie Rose’ was introduced in a commemorative bottle beginning Aug. 17 in a promotion that continued through BORA’s Re-enactment Weekend Aug. 25-26. The special-edition bottle will be sold initially through seven Madison County beverage locations, and, at Acres of Land, at a price of $24.95. Following the introductory promotion, the wine will be available at standard market prices.

The unique promotion is in tandem with the wine’s unique taste, according to Lowell Land, who owns and operates Acres of Land along with his wife, Katherine.

“Dixie Rose’ is a very versatile wine,” Land said. “It’s a soft, semi-sweet drink that can be enjoyed with a variety of dishes, or in a social setting.”

“It should be served chilled,” Katherine added, “and is great with poultry, fish, pork, beef and even pasta. It has an enticing aroma and is light red in color.”

A tasting of the wine was provided at a May reception for a Kentucky Educational Television special on the Battle of Richmond.

Acres of Land Winery was formed in 2005 and produces some 15 varieties of wine at its 615-acre facility some six miles west of Richmond.
