Second edition of Richmond book
now available through gift shop

The first definitive work on the Civil War Battle of Richmond has been reprinted by the Battle of Richmond Association in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the battle.

Written by Dr. Dean Warren Lambert and first published in 1995, When the Ripe Pears Fell chronicles many of the aspects – both military and civilian – of the Battle of Richmond, fought Aug. 29-30, 1862. The hardbound, laminated-cover book is 260 pages with photos and maps and is priced at $30.

The Battle of Richmond pitted experienced Confederate troops under Major Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith against new, raw recruits under Union Major Gen. William “Bull” Nelson, and resulted in a complete rout of the Federal forces. The battle is considered by many Civil War scholars as one of the most complete victories one side had over the other during the entire war. Other notable participants in the Battle of Richmond were Confederates Patrick Cleburne, Lucius Polk and Preston Smith, as well as Federals Mahlon Manson and Dr. Bernard J.D. Irwin.

Dr. Lambert spent some two decades painstakingly researching the battle, its participants, effects and outcome, mostly in the pre-Internet days. The long-time professor of history at Berea College died in 2002.

Lambert was a recognized specialist in Civil War and Russian history and is credited with providing the interest in founding of the Battle of Richmond Association in 2001. The Association is a 501 c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and proper interpretation of the sites related to the Battle of Richmond.

All proceeds from the sale of this second edition will benefit the Battle of Richmond Association and the Madison County (KY) Historical Society.

When the Ripe Pears Fell is available in limited numbers through the Battle of Richmond Association’s book and gift shop by calling 859-248-1974 during normal business hours.
