Ramage honored for contributions
to regional, state Civil War history

Dr. James Ramage has been honored with the Behringer-Crawford Museum’s Two-Headed Calf Community Service award for his contributions to the preservation and understanding of regional and state history.

The retired Northern Kentucky University Regents Professor of History was presented his award in March, being cited for his extraordinary contributions to history and learning.

The Paducah native is a noted Civil War scholar and is the author of two books of the period, Rebel Raider, the Life of General John Hunt Morgan and Gray Ghost: the Life of Col. John Singleton Mosby.

Dr. Ramage received numerous awards during his 20-plus years at NKU. He was named Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1988, received the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award  in 1999, and the Acorn Award from Kentucky Advocates for Higher Education in 2003.

Also, at the 2006 Phi Alpha Theta national convention, he was elected national vice president for 2006-2007 and president elect for 2008-2009.

In 2004, Dr. Ramage received a University-Community Partnership Grant through NKU’s Scripps Howard Center for Civil Engagement for the Civil War Battery Hooper Project in Northern Kentucky.

The goal was to partner with the City of Fort Wright in involving students and the public in preserving, researching and opening Battery Hooper to the public.

The project culminated in 2005 with the opening of a museum on the site. Mayor Gene Weaver and the Fort Wright City Council named the museum in honor of Ramage’s work.

Dr. Ramage, who earned his doctorate at the University of Kentucky, joined NKU in 1972 as administrative assistant to President W. Frank Steely and became a full-time faculty member in 1976.
