Davis birthday commemoration scheduled June 3-5 at Fairview

A three-day event will be conducted at Fairview in honor of the anniversary of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

The 150th birthday commemoration for the chief executive of the Confederate States of America is scheduled June 3-5 at the Jefferson Davis State Historic Site with major activities scheduled for Saturday, the fourth. Davis was born June 3, 1808.

A re-enactment, period music, a ladies tea, a Miss Confederacy pageant, artillery night firing and a re-enactors’ ball are set for Saturday. Joan Howard, portraying Varina Davis, the CSA president’s wife, will preside at the 10 a.m. tea with a battle re-enactment scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The beauty pageant, sponsored by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, follows at 3 o’clock.

On Sunday, Don Locke will portray Gen. Robert E. Lee at 10:15 a.m. and J.W. Binion will appear as Jefferson Davis at noon. A worship service is between the two presentations and the 12:30 p.m. battle re-enactment will be in salute to the native Kentuckian.
